Media Platforms Design TeamThough it was styled with all the élan of a kitchen appliance, the outoing Corolla was a mighty sales success for Toyota, moving nearly 40 million units on a platform that’s been around for nearly a half century. But as automakers will do, Toyota has transformed the 11th generation of its workaday compact into a bigger car with more features and snazzier sheetmetal. For 2014, Corolla’s wheelbase has stretched to 106.3 inches, while the rear seating area is nearly 3 inches longer. Among the four trim levels is LE Eco, which incorporates aero features, low rolling resistance tires, and a 1.8 liter four-cylinder that produces 140 hp and yields over 40 mpg on the highway. Also new is the option of a Continuously Variable Transmission, which joins an ancient four-speed automatic and a six-speed manual. But while Corolla’s more charismatic styling will likely help it become more competitive against foes from Hyundai and Kia– not to mention longstanding arch enemy Honda– its standard equipment list now includes eight airbags and Bluetooth connectivity with streaming audio, which should go a long way towards encouraging buyers to give Toyota’s ol’ standby a second look.
