Airlander 10 Gets Approval To Carry Commercial Passengers In The 2020S

The world’s largest aircraft is no more, at least temporarily. For years, the largest operational aircraft has been the Hybrid Air Vehicles’ (HAV) Airlander 10, a giant blimp-like contraption that can hold around 20 passengers and bares resemblance to a certain piece of human anatomy, some have said. The company built a prototype vehicle to test the concept, but according to HAV, that prototype is being retired. That’s not the end for the concept, however, because the Airlander 10 is going to go into full production for a new prototype that will eventually serve commercial purposes....

All The Apps We Re Using At Sxsw 2014

Media Platforms Design TeamAUSTIN, TEXAS—At SXSW, the arsenal of essential stuff you need to get by doesn’t consist of gadgets. It’s made up of apps. Southby has traditionally been known to launch apps that help put you on the map (Twitter and Foursquare), but interestingly, this year, we’re using apps that do the exact opposite of that: They’re ones that help us fly under the radar and give us handy tips—or fun and frivolous things to do with people who we already know....

Can Crowdsourcing Really Build The Hyperloop

Billions of dollars. Hundreds of miles. A gauntlet of engineering challenges and regulatory snarls. These are just a few of the reasons that bridges, highways, and other enormous infrastructure projects are the domain of governments or big corporations. And they’re among the reasons you might be surprised that the most serious attempt to build the Hyperloop plans to rely on the crowd—not on the feds. The Hyperloop took the tech world by storm in August, when Tesla Motors and SpaceX chief Elon Musk released his plans for a transportation system to take passengers from San Francisco to Los Angeles in a half-hour, a system that he said would cost in the neighborhood of $6 billion to build....

Clever New Landing Gear Allow Drones To Set Down Like Birds Or Bats

A drone needs a flat spot to land. That fact may sound simple and obvious, but it also limits their usefulness and where they can go. Now, though, Yale researchers inspired by the animal kingdom are figuring out ways that drones could perch like a bird or a bat.“Birds can be observed placing their feet on some support while still flapping their wings and bats are known to hang upside down while grasping some suitable surface,” says Kaiyu Hang, a postdoc at Yale....

Decoded Apple S Big Bet On Beats

Flying Turbine Technology Future Of Wind Power

Twenty-five-knot gusts sweep across the Pacific, scooping up kiteboarders and flinging them into the sky. Fungus Drone Decomposes When It Crashes

Media Platforms Design TeamThis drone will self-destruct. It’ll take a little more than five seconds, though.Lynn Rothschild of NASA’s Ames Research Center in California created this drone made mostly of mycelium, the vegetative part of fungus that you’ve seen commonly in mushrooms. Coated in cellulose to make it strong, the material is sturdy enough to form the basis of a small drone airframe. The idea is that a biodegradable drone could break down and disappear into a few innocent-looking constituent parts if it were ever to crash in enemy territory....
