For the first time, scientists have sequenced the genome of the ever-curious giant squid, hoping to find answers about the creature’s massive size.The draft genome sequence and supporting research was published today in the scientific journal GigaScience.Through their analysis, the researchers have uncovered hints about how the cephalopod’s brain became so huge, and how it accomplishes such impressive camouflage. Up until 2006, most of our clues about the giant squid’s very existence came in the form of their washed-up, slimy corpses on beaches or through their beaks, which have been uncovered from the bellies of sperm whales....

Studying a faraway quasar, scientists have encountered some of the oldest light in the universe. Thanks to a powerful telescope on earth and a galaxy acting as a gravitational lens, scientists have been able to observe the quasar despite its distance of 12.8 billion light-years away from Earth. Quasars are extremely bright objects in space, possibly the brightest objects in the universe. They lie at the center of distant galaxies and are powered by matter collapsing around black holes....

Astronomers have discovered the fastest-growing black hole known to exist in the universe. In its seemingly endless hunger, the supermassive black hole consumes the mass equivalent of our sun every two days.A black hole is an object with such overwhelmingly powerful gravity that not even particles of light can escape. The fastest-growing black hole was found 12 billion light-years away with the SkyMapper telescope at the Australian National University (ANU). The black hole was estimated to be the size of about 20 billion suns with a one percent growth rate every one million years....

There are more than 1,000 planets known outside our solar system, and another 3,000 plus that we think might be there from unconfirmed observations. But with names like OGLE-2012-BLG-0563L b, EPIC-20601169 b, and NGC 4349 No 127 b, they don’t exactly roll off the tongue. The IAU is taking a first step toward naming the known exoplanets, and opening them up for public voting. The NameExoWorlds competition opens up the naming of 20 star systems for a public vote....

The U.S. Navy is sending an aircraft carrier to Vietnam for the first time since the Vietnam War more than forty years ago. The reason for this courtship is an attempt to woo one of China’s neighbors and rivals to counter rising Chinese military influence in the region.The USS Carl Vinson, part of the U.S. Navy’s Third Fleet, will visit Vietnam in early March. US Navy aircraft carriers were a frequent sight off the coast of Vietnam in the 1960s and 1970s, during the Vietnam War....

A mysterious organism called “The Blob” will make its debut at the Paris Zoological Park starting Saturday, October 19.The Blob isn’t an animal, plant, or fungus, but actually a slime mold. It can heal itself after being cut in half, learn, find food, eat, move, and grow—all without a brain.The blob is already drawing comparisons to the alien organism in last year’s Venom.Although The Blob in the photo above look like a lichen, it’s not a plant....

The first operational KC-46A Pegasus, a new tanker built by Boeing for the Air Force, took to the skies for the first time on Tuesday, December 5. The aircraft took off from Paine Field outside Boeing’s plant in Everett, Washington. Boeing test pilots took the plane up to the max operating altitude of 39,000 feet and performed operational tests on the engines, flight controls, and environmental systems.In a statement, Boeing confirmed that the first KC-46 tankers, based off the 767 airframe, will not be delivered to the Air Force until 2018....
