Archaeologists have unearthed a “lost” road in Jerusalem that was likely constructed by Pontius Pilate, the Roman who presided over the trial and execution of Jesus Christ.Excavations revealed more than 100 coins beneath the street dating between 17 AD and 31 AD, meaning it would have been built during the famous Roman’s rule.Archaeologists first discovered the road in 1894, but they were unable to pinpoint the date of its construction.Archaeologists have unearthed a road that was likely built in 31 AD by Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect who oversaw the crucifixion of Jesus Christ....

Microbiologists have discovered some unsuspecting passengers aboard the International Space Station. Five drug-resistant strains of bacteria were isolated from samples taken from ISS bathrooms and gym equipment. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has long been a global health issue. Now it appears to be a solar system issue as well. A team of microbiologists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory compared the space germ genomes with 1,300 known earth-bound genomes. Their analysis showed a close genetic relationship to the bacteria that caused a 2015 outbreak in the Bugando Medical Center in Mwanza, Tanzania, which caused life-threatening infections in newborns....

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has delivered an ultimatum of sorts on the fate of the planet with regard to global warming. The countries of the world “require rapid, far reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society” in order to limit global warming to a rise of 1.5 degrees C. For these changes to meaningfully effect humanity, the IPCC warns, they must take place within the next 12 years....

Whenever local energy sources are extracted, there’s usually some sort of trade-off. It could be something serious like air quality in coal, or something minor like an altered view with a wind farm. Like an organic earthworm, sea cucumber, or snail, the soft-body bot moves via peristalsis, or squeezing and stretching the muscles along its tubular body. In Meshworm’s case, those muscles are actually wires made of a nickel-titanium shape-memory alloy that expands and contracts when heated. The wires are wound around the mesh tube (the mesh and stretch and contract because it’s made of interlaced polymers)....

An expedition has successfully discovered wreckage from the USS Lexington, an early aircraft carrier that was sunk off the coast of Australia during World War II.The expedition was led using the R/V Petrel, a research ship owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The world’s only privately-owned vessel in the world equipped to explore 6,000-meter depths, the Petrel had been exploring the Coral Sea hoping to find the legendary ship.“To pay tribute to the USS Lexington and the brave men that served on her is an honor,” said Paul Allen in a press statement....

New research into high-power microwaves could make them a crucial tool of electronic warfare. The U.S. Air Force’s newest directed-energy weapon program, the Counter-Electronics High-Powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP), would create a weapon that fires powerful bursts of HPM, frying the electronics of multiple targets without harming people or other infrastructure. CHAMP’s microwaves could be delivered from pods on airplanes, unmanned aerial vehicles or even retrievable cruise missiles programmed to safely land near their points of origin, says Doug Beason, a member of the Air Force’s Science Advisory Board who has worked on directed-energy weapons....

NASA today announced the astronauts who will be flying on the first SpaceX and Boeing crewed spacecraft. The astronauts were greeted with waves of applause at the Johnson Space Center.
