It’s been no real secret that Uber has had plans to get into the self-driving car game so it can ultimately eliminate its need for pesky meatbag drivers, and now its first prototype is hitting the road. Developed by the ride-sharing giant’s Advanced Technologies Center (ATC) in Pittsburgh, the hybrid Ford Fusion has already made its first trips on public roads, entering into a technological race with other giants like Google and Tesla.Just about a year ago, local Pittsburgh press caught a glimpse of an even earlier prototype. But this model—with its impressively large array of sensors on top—is the first official version. According to Uber, the high-tech hat includes “radars, laser scanners, and high resolution cameras.” Or as the Tribune-Review put it, “22 coffee cup-sized camera lenses, a whirling laser on the roof and laser sensors at the corners.“The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review also got a chance to ride in the car, and it sounds like the test went off without a hitch: The car drove itself over the 31st Street Bridge and along River Avenue on the North Side before turning around at the Heinz Lofts. … The car’s sensors detected parked cars sticking out into traffic, jaywalkers, bicyclists and a goose crossing River Avenue.A goose! Human drivers are clearly not long for this world. Source: Uber, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review via The Verge
